Melancholy Matter

Guoda Sulskyte

A film and sound installation designed to present a walking performance in ‘dark’ places. Taking the themes of dark matter, post-soviet melancholy and black bile “Melancholy Matter” is a project that researches the etymology of materials, manifesting the realm of the unknown and unexplored. Located between fiction and documentary it relates historical, cultural and personal narratives together with the scientific practice, and develops imaginative ‘domains’ to explore alternative methods of questioning reality. The distinct contexts that move from body, to socio-political, to cosmological tour around the darkness of the Soviet bunker and 1,1km dark matter space in the Boulby Underground Laboratory, aiming to enhance a conversation about critical material science and result in a unique collection of distinctive perspective on the mysteries of the universe and humanity’s role within it.
