Maternal Memoriam

Imogen van der Pols

“Here I was on the production line, as a kind of fodder passed along between doctors and consultants"  - Jo Spence Reimagining the breast prosthesis given to women with breast cancer, post-mastectomy. By casting the original breast to create a custom prosthesis, the traditional prosthesis is transformed from a flimsy, foreign object to one weighted in personal and physical value. This method would ensure that, through casting of the breast, a non-clinical touch would be brought to the healing process of breast cancer: an anti-dote to the invasive mastectomy. The prosthesis allows the woman to wear a prosthetic that feels familiar, and also serves as a piece of personal history: in memoriam of the part of the maternal body they face the loss of.
