People, Politics & Place:
Re-mapping New Cross
From looking at Dovey’s notion that “placemaking is inherently an elite practice” – I have come to realise that place is designed in accord with the interests of the powerful in pursuit of amenity, profit, status and political power. Throughout this project I have developed interventions that challenge the status quo - objects and processes that interfere with and challenge discrimination. I have experimented with finding effective ways to discuss issues surrounding social exclusion for minority groups whilst also reflecting on my place as a student within the community of New Cross.
