How to Tintinnabulate Disruptively

Maria Hardy

Church bells have been rang, chimed and tolled for centuries to gain the attention of the masses through wordless meaning.

I questioned whether bells can be utilised as a system to magnify smaller scale concerns as a form of micro social political play.

Through a performative mode I have mapped sites of impending demise. Subtracting the existing architectures of the bell tower, choreographing the reconstruction, and situating the performance in locations for a similar use of attention drawing through tintinnabulation.

Highlighting otherwise ‘lost sites’ by performing a ritual inspired by the funeral toll in change ringing to mark changing areas on the human landscape.
