Evoking A Vividness
I feel that we cannot continue to restrict out thoughts to the spoken or written word. It is clear that Sign Language (BSL) offers endless avenues and possibilities for understanding language and self expression - and that we must engage with these possibilities. That its disruption of the conventional perceptions of language, community, culture, and story-telling should be recognised and valued by hearing people.
By having different British Sign Language users interpret the same storyboard, its creates an opportunity for multiple interpretations and in turn multiple layers of translation. My work focuses on creating a vehicle for storytelling that moves away from the spoken or written word, and a new method of story production that highlights how Sign Language can provide an unexpected perspective, deconstruct the fixed boundaries of language, and allow one to converse through visual image.
